Not A Single Doubt's Samadoubt Surprises in First Group 1 of the Season

samadoubt-winx hartThe first Group 1 race of the season was run at Randwick on Saturday and by season's end it's likely to have provided the most unlikeliest of winners.

The well-exposed 6yo gelding Samadoubt had won nothing grander than the Listed Canberra Cup in 34 previous starts but under a front-running masterpiece by Tim Clark the son of Not A Single Doubt held on to defeat the triple Group 1 winner and near $7 million earner Happy Clapper (Teofilo) by half a length with a further neck back to Invincible Gem (I Am Invincible) who edged out the favourite Avilius for third. The team at Arrowfield has had plenty of cause for celebration in the last week, thanks to the dynasty founded by the late, great Redoute’s Choice (Danehill {USA})

Three-time champion stallion Redoute's Choice claimed his first broodmare sires’ premiership in the 2018-19 Australian season, while his exceptional son Snitzel won a third consecutive sires’ premiership title.

“It’s been very exciting,” Arrowfield’s bloodstock manager Jon Freyer said.

“Redoute’s Choice broke the all-time record for earnings in a season as a broodmare sire, while Snitzel’s third premiership title was an extremely rare feat. It’s not completely unprecedented, but only a handful of truly great sires have done it. It was a wonderful result for father and son.”

A hat trick for Snitzel

Snitzel’s third premiership title came with a staggering $24.2 million in prize-money – almost $7 million more than runner-up I Am Invincible (Invincible Spirit {IRE}). He had 180 winners from 346 runners during the 2018-19 Australian season, with 12 stakes winners.

First European Bred Group I Winner Redoute’s Choice

Much missed champion sire Redoute's Choice posted his first Northern Hemisphere bred Group I winner in Germany on Sunday with four year-old gelding Danceteria won the Group I Grosser Dallmayr-Preis at Munich for owners that include Australian Bloodstock in whose colours he runs.

Redoute's Choice

Conceived in France during the second of two shuttle seasons for Redoute's Choice to the Northern Hemisphere, Danceteria scored a length and a quarter win in the 1m2f contest taking his overall record to seven wins from 16 starts.

Trained by David Menuisier, Danceteria ihas been in top form this year winning the Group III La Coupe Stakes at Longchamp two starts ago and coming into this race off a brave fourth to Enable in the Group I Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown.

Four new faces join 100 winners club

Reward For Effort and All Too Hard are among four stallions to have cracked the 100 winners-in-a-season mark for the first time.RFE-300x293

Four new stallions have joined the 100-club this season, with 12 in all notching 100 winners for the 2018-19 season to date.

Another six stallions sit in the 90s, awaiting their chance to reach triple figures over the final five weeks of the season.

The four new inductees into the 100-club are Coolmore pair Pierro (103) and So You Think (NZ) (101) and Chatswood Stud's Reward For Effort (105) and Vinery Stud's All Too Hard (101).

They join I Am Invincible (170), Snitzel (168), Sebring (143), Written Tycoon (138), Fastnet Rock (106) and High Chaparral (Ire) (109) as well as Smart Missile (123) and Star Witness (115), who both broke through the triple figures for the first time last season.

Star In The Making

In his first shuttle season at Tweenhills Stud in Britain, Zoustar has been equipped with all the right ingredients to build on his early success in Australia.

Zoustar has been perfect at stud so far in Australia. Widden Stud’s record-breaking champion first-season sire is currently heading the table for the second-zoustar2019season sires, his treble Group 1-winning daughter Sunlight having helped him into what appears to be an unassailable lead with a little over two months of the current season still to run, and he is the leading sire of 3-year-olds ahead of such established names as Redoute’s Choice, I Am Invincible and Snitzel.

Now, in effect, he has to start all over again in the northern hemisphere but, judging by the reception he has been given by European breeders, the odds of success are stacked in his favour.

We’ve seen support for reverse shuttlers to Europe dwindle markedly after their first season: witness the case of Sidestep, who dropped from just over 100 mares to 23 in two years and did not return to France in 2019, the year his daughter Kiamichi announced his arrival on the stallion scene with victory in the Golden Slipper.
