Eliza Park Sold

In resounding news for the Australian breeding industry, it has been announced that international conglomerate, Sun International Group, has purchased leading stud farm, Eliza Park.

To be now known as Eliza Park International Pty Ltd, the organisation retains its current lineup of 12 stallions, while the divisions on each of its six farms in Victoria and Queensland will also continue to function in similar manner.

Sun Kingdom's Ting Kong Cheng, said he is delighted to have acquired Eliza Park and is very excited about the stud's future and his company's involvement in the Australian thoroughbred industry.

Arrowfield's Rich History

Danehill-1091996 resized“When he took a half-step outside his box,” is John Messara’s recollection of the moment in late 1989 when he knew he just had to buy the horse that would re-engineer the Australian thoroughbred and transform the international bloodstock industry.  Pictured: The great international sire Danehill, brought to Australia by Arrowfield in 1990.

With legendary vet Dr Percy Sykes at his side, Messara took a closer look at the horse called Danehill, a big, powerful son of Danzig and Razyana bred in the United States by Juddmonte Farms and trained by Jeremy Tree for Prince Khalid Abdullah. Described by Timeform as a “high-class colt” with “a quick, fluent action”, Danehill won four of his nine starts in England, Ireland & France, including the Haydock Sprint Cup G1 and Royal Ascot Cork and Orrery S. G2.

Stud cuts fee to keep blueblood purring

To sire a Group I winner from your first crop of foals is a big milestone for any young sire and for Purrealist it became a reality during the Brisbane Winter Carnival when his high class son Hawkspur captured the BRC Queensland Derby.

The Chris Waller trained three year-old reeled off a string of impressive wins claiming the Group III Rough Habit Plate and Grand Prix, before his three length Derby triumph, ending the season with more than $657,000 in prizemoney.

Purrealist12His emergence has really put the spotlight on his sire Purrealist, who has had an interesting career path and now finds himself at Chatswood Stud after the downsizing of Tony and Deslee Santic’s Makybe operation.

Bought for Makybe and partners from the 2006 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by respected bloodstock agent John Foote for $700,000, Purrealist is a blue-blood being a half-brother by Tale of the Cat (USA) to champion miler Racing to Win.

Timing is Everything

A lot can happen in the space of two years in the world of thoroughbred breeding and for this promising young stallion, events that have unfolded since spring 2011 have now positioned him as one of the most exciting stallions in the country.

RFE-300x293Reward for Effort retired to Chatswood Stud two years ago and as a Group I winning juvenile by a very good sire in Exceed and Excel, he had no trouble attracting support at a fee of $11,000 and covered 150 mares.
The best Victorian juvenile of his generation, Reward for Effort won two of his first three starts for Peter Moody, taking the Listed MRC Blue Diamond Preview on debut, then finishing second to Real Saga in the Group III MRC Blue Diamond Prelude.

He turned the tables on that colt to win the Group I MRC Blue Diamond Stakes by more than a length before failing on a treacherous heavy track in the Golden Slipper won by Phelan Ready.

Injured as a spring three year-old, Reward for Effort missed virtually his entire classic season, stepping out in late July to win the Listed MRC Sir John Monash Stakes and then travelling to Sydney to win the Group III STC Concorde Stakes as a four year-old.

Best of the Best

ANACHEEVA - (Anabaa ex Monroe Magic) -  He's the best son of a widely admired shuttle sire that has left a lasting legacy worldwide.

Exactly three years ago Peter Moody produced a promising Anabaa (USA) colt to win the Listed MVRC Mitchell McKenzie Stakes at Moonee Valley and by the end of spring, Anacheeva was being hailed as the best three year-old colt in the country.

anacheeva2013 400Given a light preparation of just three starts as a two year-old, Anacheeva won on debut at Sale and finished a close and unlucky fourth to Skilled in the Group I ATC Champagne Stakes in Sydney stamping himself as a colt of some potential.
