THE wisdom of the management of the Glenlogan Park Stud, a team headed by prominent businessman Jon Haseler and manager Steve Morley, in concentrating in the last ten years on talented Australian gallopers for its stallion yards, reaped more impressive rewards in the 2013-14 racing year which ended at the end of July.

One of the most interesting results was the aggregate income earned during the year by the six sires at the Innisplain Valley located Glenlogan Park that had runners. Despite the fact that one, Real Saga, had only two crops of racing age, and another Red Element, was in his first year of representation, they ended up with earnings for the year of over $16million, a record for a Queensland stud. The money would have been much greater, if Queensland prize money was up with that offered in New South Wales and Victoria.

showahearthead 300The top contributor again to the Glenlogan results was their Queensland superstar sire Show a Heart, a Star Kingdom male line product of the mating of Brave Warrior and the tough Regal Advice mare Miss Sandman. He finished with 107 winners (10 overseas) of 173 races and $4,557,721 (Aust earnings $3,041,935).

Show a Heart had been the champion Queensland sire on Australian earnings for each of the previous five years, but finished second in 2013-14 to Lyndhurst Stud’s veteran sire Sequalo, one represented by a million dollar earner during the year, Spirit of Boom.

Show a Heart did not have a big time winner in 20013-14, but is a proven sire of national consequence with five million dollar earners, Heart of Dreams, Toorak Toff, Woorim, Mimi Lebrock and Heart of the Citi, on his honour board.

He is one of four established sires at Glenlogan who each had progeny earnings of over $2.8million – including overseas representation – in the past year. The others are Bradbury’s Luck (Redoute’s Choice – Skating, by At Talaq), 54 winners of 92 races and $3,684,765; Jet Spur (Flying Spur – Verocative, by Bletchingly), 89 winners,145 wins, $2,964,512; and Falvelon (Alannon – Devil’s Piper, by Zephyr Zing), 76 winners, 143 wins, $2,830,014.

Another of their sires, Real Saga (Tale of the Cat – Windy Kate, by Air Express), followed up being the 2012-13 top Queensland juvenile sire, second to Northern Meteor on the national first season sires list and fourth on the main juvenile list, by taking the Queensland champion juvenile sire again in 2013-14. He finished Queensland’s leading two crop sire and fourth in the national statistics.

Real Saga’s score for his second year of representation is 37 winners (only one outside Australia) of 50 races and $1,761,000. The money appears to be third highest ever for a Queensland located two crop sire, surpassed only by two earlier Glenlogan sires, Show a Heart 2006-07 ($2,240,540 – easily the leader nationally) and Falvelon 2007-08 ($1,762,225- fourth nationally).

Show a Heart was Australia’s leading first crop sire for 2005-06 and two crop sire 2006-07 and in addition in the latter year claimed the title of New Zealand’s champion juvenile sire 2006. It was a year in which Falvelon got off to a good start, finishing Queensland’s most successful sire of 2-year-olds and eighth nationally.

The next two sires launched by Glenlogan, Jet Spur (the Queensland leader by winners and wins) and Bradbury’s Luck, finished sixth and ninth respectively in the national first season sires list for 2009-10. Jet Spur was Queensland’s leading two crop sire and third nationally for 2010-11 and Bradbury’s Luck was Queensland’s third top sire behind Show a Heart on earnings and fourth on the national three crop list for 2011-12.

That year was followed in 2012-13 by Show a Heart, Brabury’s Luck and Sequalo being the leading Queensland sires on earnings and Real Saga the State’s top juvenile sire.

The spectacular record of the Glenlogan sires to make an immediate impact was added to when Red Element (Red Ransom – Tracy’s Element, by Last Tycoon) was Queensland’s leading first crop sire for 2013-14.

It is a record that looks very likely to be added to when a new Glenlogan sire, Rothesay (Fastnet Rock – Schiaparelli, by Woodman) has first crop 2-year-old runners over the next twelve months. He has had books of 152, 165 and 137.

That Glenlogan is in for another big year in 2014-15 was indicated by Queensland results over the first three days of August. Winners by Jet Spur and Show a Heart at Ipswich on Friday were followed on Saturday by winners by Jet Spur at Eagle Farm and the Gold Coast, a venue which also produced one by Falvelon. Falvelon also provided a winner at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday, a day on which Real Saga had one in Malaysia.

A feature of the first Brisbane race meeting of the new year was that the first five places in the opening event were filled by progeny of Glenlogan sires, in order of finish Jet Spur, Real Saga, Bradbury’s Luck, Real Saga and Jet Spur.

Fees, including GST, for the seven sires available this year are Brabury’s Luck $11,000, Falvelon $8,800, Jet Spur $11,000, Real Saga $18,150, Red Element $5,500, Rothesay $12,100 and Show a Heart $16,500.
